Teachers are a Positive Force in Students' Lives by Sarah - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
America is a materialistic society, as citizens live by (and sometimes even worship) tangible things such as phones, computers, and other objects. Sometimes, however, it is nice to step back and realize just how lucky we (as Americans) are. As an adolescent in modern American society, I am incredibly thankful for the right to receive a free, public education through grade twelve. More than that, I am grateful for my teachers, who put in countless unpaid hours to better my education and make school a safe and thrilling place to be.
Sometimes, being a teacher is downright horrible. They are underpaid (especially in the United States), under-appreciated, and have to deal with moody children from time to time. This does not stop them from being positive role models and constantly striving to help when needed. This year, more than ever before, I have noticed that my teachers put in limitless volunteer hours to aid with programs such as after school tutoring, Saturday school (a place where kids can get extra help), and even stay for hours after school so that kids can get assistance when struggling. Teachers are always dependable when students are failing, and will always be there to aid them. Some of my teachers even spend their weekends typing study guides so that we do not fail the tests. All the while, I seldom hear them complain.
As stated above, my teachers continuously strive to make my peers and my education better. Last year, for example, my history teacher helped a group of us study for the upcoming AP test. She let us stay for hours after school to study, giving up family time to do so. She even let us come in on a Saturday to take a practice exam, which amounted to over 5 hours of time. Her determination helped me to eventually pass the AP Exam. My chemistry teacher also is committed to the success of her students. She spends about eight hours per book chapter making an online quiz to study for the tests. This is a huge commitment on her part, as she could easily not put forth any effort outside of the classroom. My spanish teacher, too, deeply cares about our successes. She admitted to us that she dreams about us some nights, and constantly worries about our wellbeing. Every June, she makes a personal connection with each of her graduating seniors by purchasing a book that fits their personality. The books are a symbol of the caring nature and thoughtfulness of teachers, as they truly make school a wonderful place, and a place where I can enjoy my education.
This really shows the stamina of some of my teachers, and shows that the education system in America is not entirely corrupt. Although teachers do not have the best reputation, and have to deal with many crummy situations, they continually make the best of the scenarios at hand and create a positive learning environment for all. They always come to class with a smile, and are ready to tackle the learning day. Either unknowingly or knowingly, teachers shape the future of America and the world through education of young people. Just imagine the chaos in a world without teachers.
