Going Beyond the Books by Sarah - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

Without education, we would have no ability to grow as a society and see progress. Education is the basis for growth and it is what gives the youth structure to take on tasks and achieve what they need for the future. The purpose of education is simple: to provide instruction and experience so that people can take on jobs and improve the future.

Imagine a life where education did not exist. How would jobs be assigned? How would we progress as humans and create all of the incredible innovations we have access to today? Without education, say goodbye to your iPhone, laptop, TV, maybe even electricity. There’s no guarantee that we’d have any of these inventions without education. But this goes farther than just not having our fun gadgets and toys – if we didn’t have an education system, how would we have doctors? People aren’t just born with the ability to perform surgery or diagnose diseases; they have to learn it. Life expectancy would be drastically less than it is currently. How would children get the encouragement and motivation they need to succeed if they don’t have to work to earn grades or reach goals?

Education isn’t all about memorizing equations or analyzing Shakespeare. It’s about structuring the mind and preparing children for jobs in the real word. It’s about helping people find their passions so that they know what they’re good at to be successful in the future. The purpose of it is unlimited: whether it’s to push the youth to work their hardest, to make new discoveries and bring progress for the future, or to help everyone find their niche in the workplace, it’s clear that education is needed for all aspects in our society.
