How I faced and overcame a challenging academic experience by Sarah - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I look back at my high school journey, one of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year in chemistry class. Science has always intrigued me, especially as I plan to pursue a career in nursing. However, chemistry was a subject that seemed to have a language of its own, and I struggled to understand its complexities.

At the start of the year, I was excited to dive into the world of elements and reactions. But as the weeks went by, I found myself falling behind. Concepts like stoichiometry and molecular structures were difficult for me to grasp. My grades were not reflecting the effort I was putting in, and it was disheartening. With a GPA of 2.8, I knew I could not afford to let my performance in this class slip any further if I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse.

The turning point came after a particularly difficult exam. I remember getting my test back and feeling a sense of defeat. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my chemistry teacher and expressed my struggles. She was understanding and suggested that I attend after-school tutoring sessions. This was not easy for me, as I had to manage my time better and give up some of my free time, but I knew it was necessary.

During these tutoring sessions, I was able to ask questions in a smaller setting, which helped me understand the material better. My teacher explained concepts in different ways until I found a method that clicked for me. I also started to form study groups with a few classmates who were also finding the subject challenging. We supported each other, shared notes, and explained different topics to one another. This collaborative effort made a big difference in my understanding of the subject.

In addition to seeking help from others, I realized the importance of self-discipline and organization. I created a study schedule that included dedicated time for chemistry each day. I broke down the topics into smaller sections and focused on mastering one at a time. I also utilized online resources, such as educational videos and practice quizzes, to reinforce what I was learning in class.

Through persistence and hard work, I began to see improvements. My grades gradually went up, and I started to feel more confident in my abilities. More importantly, I learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a step towards growth. I also discovered the value of teamwork and how much we can achieve when we support each other.

This experience taught me resilience and the importance of adapting to challenges. It showed me that while I may face obstacles in my academic journey, there are always ways to overcome them with determination and the right support. As I look forward to attending college, particularly at Barry University or Bethune Cookman University, I carry these lessons with me. I am excited to pursue a major in nursing, where I can apply my love for science and my desire to help others.

In nursing, I know I will face many challenges, but my experience in chemistry has prepared me to tackle them head-on. I am committed to working hard and continuing to seek help and learn from others when needed. I believe that my ability to overcome academic challenges will serve me well in college and beyond.

In conclusion, my challenging experience in chemistry was a pivotal moment in my high school career. It tested my perseverance and taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me into the future. I am grateful for the support of my teacher and classmates, and I am proud of the progress I made. I am ready to take on the challenges of college and am determined to succeed in my pursuit of a nursing degree.
