One Set at a Time by Sarah - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
Initially, I didn’t think much about our school’s volleyball semifinal game; we faced a team we had beaten earlier in the season, so I felt confident. However, as we lost point after point—set after set—I quickly noticed our team slowly losing enthusiasm. So I cheered my teammates on louder than ever, nearly losing my voice as we earned more and more points, leading into a fifth tiebreaker set. Our team was practically at the finish line when our team abruptly struggled once more and lost 13-15. It was a tough loss for us, but in the end, I was still proud of how far we progressed—both individually and as a team. And that is what I believe a true community member should strive to be: involved, supportive, and positive.
I first got interested in volleyball seven years ago, in the summer of sixth grade; it was tryout day, and I figured it would be fun to try a new sport. Once I made the team, I quickly discovered a newfound passion for volleyball and actively aimed to better myself in any way possible. The more I practiced and played with others, the more I fell in love with the sport and wanted myself and those around me to improve. As middle school ended, I continued playing volleyball in high school, keeping my values in mind for future seasons.
Throughout high school, my teammates constantly noticed my positivity and urge to improve. No matter where I was, I was ready to give it my all—whether we were winning or losing, in a game or just for practice; even on the sidelines, I was still cheering, helping out my teammates wherever possible. As time passed, I noticed my reserved and unconfident teammates transform into some of the best players I have ever met, who looked up to me for inspiration. In a way, I realized that the people I spread my positive attitude to were finding ways to return it.
In my senior year of high school, I—along with four other seniors—celebrated our final year on the team on the night of our last home game with our underclass teammates. Here was when I ultimately discovered my teammates’ appreciation of me, as I received numerous gifts and speeches. But, most notably of all, I was given a letter from two Juniors detailing how much they adore my enthusiasm, attitude, and mindset (among other small details). This letter further confirmed how the team truly valued me as someone in their community. Even though that ceremony announced the end of my high school volleyball year, it was not the end of my entire volleyball career.
Overall—I have had a massive impact on my community, which I have remained passionate about for several years. I have constantly pushed myself and others to have a positive mindset, which my teammates have shown gratitude for. Despite not contributing to the sport itself, I have impacted my teammates and myself along my journey. I have and will continue to be involved, positive, and supportive of other volleyball players. If there is anything to remember from my story, anyone can contribute to a community with something as small as having fun.
