Be the Change by Sarah - December 2022 Scholarship Essay

In 2022, I learned that you should never take the ones you love for granted. Life isn't certain but death is so you should cherish those you care for. I learned that family isn't always blood, it's whoever you choose to call family. I've always had empathy and compassion, but this year through a college course I learned to think about it in a different way. Most everyone is walking around with some type of trauma, and they cope with it in different ways. Sometimes that means people won't always be nice and friendly, they will also come off as rude and unapproachable. This just means that we need to be more patient with others and love them no matter what.
The lessons I've learned this year will help me with my goals for the upcoming year, but most importantly they will follow me for the rest of my life. Knowing that almost everyone has unhealed, and undealt with trauma, make me have more compassion and patience for strangers. I plan to get into a job that is dealing with people in circumstances that they never thought they'd be in or in situations they put themselves in. No matter the case they are still human and deserve the same respect and access to the right resources as anyone else.
