Back to Pre-School by Sarah - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

In pre-school we all learned the saying “take what you get and don’t throw a fit”. Now this is a common phrase that is used by millions when someone is complaining but when we put it into the real world perspective and not just our kindergarten and pre-school classroom then it makes complete sense.  I have grown up and been parented by the “ME ME GENERATION” which created my generation that is called the “ME ME ME GENERATION”. What does this say about our future? Is the next generation and the generation after that going to be even worse? This could call into question many different things such as our humanity and our civilization.
As humans we have evolved to contain a subconscious that allows us the knowledge of right and wrong. Because of this we have created civilization but this can all be wrecked by selfishness and greed. This can be exemplified throughout many dates in history such as the Holocaust, The Reign of Terror and even our modern day society. We are at an age where greed is at an all time high and we are no longer satisfied with the things that once did. As humans we are allowed to keep evolving but when will enough ever be enough? Even America’s past time sport, baseball highlights the egotistical players who get paid on average of 3.4 million dollars a year. That’s an outrageous number when you put in the perspective that there our people in America who can’t even afford to feed and provide a good home for their kids.
We hear constant stories about banks that cheat their loyal customers out of money all the time. This is caused by stinginess and most of all greed. Why can’t we just accept what we have and be happy with it? Banks exemplify the destructive beast in everyone that can lose control and do things that are cruel and illegal. Money is a dangerous thing that no one can seem to get enough of. We work all our lives to get a job so that we can make money. This is what our lives revolve around. The stinginess inside of people has created this addiction to where we now associate money with happiness. It as if we have devised this illogical and irrational theory being that if we aren’t rich then we’re not fully happy. Becoming content of where we stand in the world has almost become a joke.
It’s almost as if the world needs to go back to pre-school and relearn this lesson. When I go back and think about this I know it’s true because especially still being in high school I see this everywhere. I have done this multiple times before to and when I think about it I have been guilty top this more times than I would like to admit. We need to learn to be happy with what we have and not associate happiness with material items and just enjoy being who we are and appreciative of what we are already so fortunate to have.
