social media by Sarah - March 2022 Scholarship Essay

Social media has impacted the way I learn by the access to cheat was right at my finger tips. With COVID-19 when we were all online the access to cheat was higher then ever. Not having a teacher or anyone in front of you to stop you from cheating online school seemed like an easy A. Especially since you could text your friends and ask for answers or even look online for answers since no one was there to stop you. Also with all of these new social media platforms you could post answers online, send your friends answers, or receive answers.
On the flip side social media impacted the way I learn in a positive way by seeing how other people study or other ways people do things and applying them to me. An example would be Tiktok, many teenagers would post 15 second videos of how they study or things they do to help them stay organized. Watching them and trying them for myself a few of them are actually helpful. I actually have had a few teachers show a video from Tiktok about how someone took notes and we applied that in our class.
A disadvantage of its influence on education is with students knowing they could easily go online and look for answers or go and text one of their friends for them it will effect the students motivation to actually do their work. They will think they can just go online or ask a friend and get the assignment done in half the time then actually learning and doing it themself.
An advantage would be there are many amazing study apps or study groups online that students can access through social media. They are able to talk to other students from other schools about the same class and learn about different ways the same class or subject is being taught. Every teacher has their own way of teaching things, but every student has their own way of learning. So some students could not be picking up on a concept because of the way the teacher teaches it and could talk to a friend or another student taking that class and ask for some extra help and could learn the topic from just one study day.
