An Environment of Teamwork by Sarah - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

At my school I am involved in various activities. I have participated in multiple sports, student council, speech, National Honors Society, and a few other activities. I love being involved because of the new experiences I gain from involvement, but also the relationships I have created with the people around me. The most rewarding element I have taken away from the clubs, sports, and activities I am involved in are the people I work and spend time with in my school and community. Because I am a part of various activities and gained new relationships, I believe my contribution to my school and my peers is being able to connect with all different types of people and bring them together.
Athletics has given me an opportunity to meet many different people and figure out how to work with them in a team setting. I have competed on several different teams through soccer, basketball, tennis, and track. Through high school sports, as a team we have to figure out how to work together with teammates of all different ages and backgrounds. This task is difficult, but also rewarding when we figure out how to successfully accomplish goals as a team. As the opportunity to often be a team captain and leader, I have found myself working to bring our teams together. By creating strong bonds as a team, I gain relationships and our results are much more successful on our teams. Athletics is not the only place where a team mentality is beneficial.
Every year, I have been a part of the student council at my school. Again, there is a challenge of working with many different people of varying ages and backgrounds. Additionally, as ASB President, a difficulty is being able to pull together other leaders who have various ideas and strengths. I have struggled to figure out how others lead, and how to help everyone in student council to work at their capacity as a leader. Also, through student council, I have had to reach out to the student body to get them to involve themselves in activities and fundraisers we put on as a leadership class. This has pushed me to talk to several people I have never talked to before to help our school involvement. Student council has allowed me to relate to my peers on a personal level.
Through student council, athletics, and other activities I am a part of, I have found that my contribution to my school is a promotion of school culture. Through creating relationships with varying people in my school, I have been able to create meaningful relationships and promote school involvement to my classmates. Last year, I was the recipient of the Barnabas award at our school. This award is given to one student for their kindness and inspiration to others. I have found this award to be the evidence of the relationships I have developed and utilized in increasing positive school culture.
