The McCarn Effect by Sarah - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
My school is so small it’s suffocating. There are fourteen students including myself and two teachers. For six years I have been trying to enact change in this tiny blip of a school. Recently, I have finally broken through. Assistance to those who need it when applying for colleges will finally come into play at this school. All because of a civics assignment I wrote.
For my Civics class, I was assigned to write an outline of what my campaign would be if I ran for student body president. I included a college preparation course led by students such as myself who have gone through the application process and an overall more modern school operating system. My goal was to bring them out of the sixties and into the twenty-first century and prepare the kids who didn’t know what they were doing college-wise for the years ahead.
When I gave my assignment to them to read, they were thrilled. Someone wanted to make change happen, mentioned it enough times, and had a clear enough idea of what they wanted to do, that change seemed feasible. After a short discussion and some planning, a date was set for the six-week course on a college preparation course, it has been named the College Application Assistance Program, or CAAP. This program will help students learn about financial aid, dual enrollment, and plenty of other things I was not entirely prepared for when I began my application process.
Through my six years in this school, I have strived to leave it in far better condition than I found it in. After this year, I can be sure that the students who follow the class of 2020 will be prepared and ready for their futures.
