The Road Less Traveled by Sarah - August 2019 Scholarship Essay

If I had a gap year I would go backpacking around Europe and spend a summer in France for a cultural immersion experience.

Just kidding.

I feel like anyone who answers this question automatically goes to the idea of travel. We're young, we don't have any responsibilities, and our life is finally in our own hands, travel just seems like the next step right? I disagree. If I took a gap year, I would take that time to get myself adjusted to my new adult life.
I would look for a good job and work my way up. As a minority female, it's imperative that I get myself established in the working world as soon as possible if I want to succeed. I've never had small dreams and I know that you don't reach success overnight. Feeling accomplished is a privilege, not a right.
Another thing I would like to do is get to spend time with my family. My older brother recently became a husband and I am excitedly awaiting for nieces and nephews. I would like to be the best aunt I can be. Just yesterday I was scavenging Amazon for clothes and toys I could spoil them with. I'm currently committed to a school in Arizona and although I'm sad to live so far from my family, I'm excited about what my next chapter will hold.
The last major thing I would do in my gap year is road trip around the United States and collect vinyl stickers from every state I visit and put them on the back of my vintage VW Microbus (disclaimer: I do not currently own this VW Microbus, but I'm sure I'll get one eventually. If you know anyone selling a yellow or orange Microbus, send me there info).
