Ultimate Success by Sarah - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

Life without passion is bland. Passion is the main reason many of us do what we do, and why I am going to college. I have a passion for helping those who can’t help themselves; I have a passion for bringing hope to those who don’t know what it’s like. As a student pursuing a ministerial job after college, passion can either make or break my career. However, it isn't the key to success. Many of us have been so passionate about something, and have failed horribly.

In the fifth grade, I had a strong passion for softball. I practiced every day in the summer persistently. One day a ball hit me straight in the eye, and my passion died in the instant. There was not a foundation on which my passion was built on. Passion lives or dies based on the presence of curiosity, and I didn’t have it. The same goes with schooling.

Samuel Johnson once said “curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect.” The only thing that will keep my passion of learning going when I happen to fail a test or get a poor grade on a paper is the curiosity pulling me towards the subject, leading to ultimate success.
