A Word With Many Meanings by Sarah - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I were asked to name a single word to describe my motive to attend college, I wouldn't really know what to say. Trying to find a single word to explain my reasoning for my choice to attend college is no easy feat. Particularly because I desire to attend college for many reasons. I wish to go so that I can acquire new knowledge, expand my horizons, meet new people, and gain the college life experience. Coming up with a single word just seems to lean towards a very broad reason to describe all of these desires of mine. So naturally, I could only come up with several words to define my reasoning. I could choose any word such as experience, learning, communications, or even just the word because. Because why not go to college. However, as I continue to ponder the many words that represent my desires. I find that there may be a word to sum up everything that I have discussed so far, and that particular word would be opportunity.
I would attend college for all of the opportunities that it would provide me. It would give me the opportunity to learn new things. Opportunity to learn about the things that interest me. And by learning more, would grant me the opportunity to expand my horizons. Giving me a chance to try out new things as well. College would offer opportunities to meet new people, such as professors, peers, and people with diverse cultures, lives, and mentalities. Altogether, these things would be a new experience for me.
Opportunity is all I ever truly wanted to gain from going to college. A chance to change myself, and perhaps others along the way too. Opportunity is the motive for practically everything. Just sit down and think about it, why does anybody do anything that is considered challenging? Because the challenge provides opportunities as the consequence.
