The Talk about Community Service by Sarah - July 2017 Scholarship Essay

As the dictionary states, community service is, “voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area.” It is what brings our community together as one. My ted talk will entail what community services means to me, how I stay active in the community, and having the courage to make a difference in your own community.
When I think of community service I think of someone who is willing to give their time so that others may benefit from it. I believe it takes a selfless person to truly understand the concept of community engagement and the rewards you can receive from it.
One way I am currently involved in the community is through my cheer team, Team Galaxy. Two years ago I wrote a business plan for a special needs cheer team. The plan included wanting to create a team for kids with special needs to not only learn all the technical aspects of cheerleading, but to provide a home for them to laugh, grow, and be themselves. Little did I know my big dream would turn into a big reality. Our mission statement states, “Team Galaxy is a community based special needs cheer team that enhances the life of its cheerleaders.” This team has provided an outlet for kids who aren't always given the same opportunities as you and me.
Having the courage to make a difference in the community is the first step to a better society.Community service gives people the opportunity to better understand themselves and the things they are passionate about. The most important thing I have learned from participating in community service would be to not let obstacles stop you from pursuing your passion.
I chose to focus on community service because it is the foundation of our society. It is the little things in life that make a big difference. Community service not only benefits the community but the individual as well. The satisfaction that people gain from community service contributes hugely to their health. According to the National and Community Service, “those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life.” As a result of my Ted talk I hope to share the message that community service is not only an optional duty but a positive lifestyle.
