My Experience at a Community College by Sarah - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

I was very excited to start college. Now that I am in college and experiencing it for myself it has been an appealing time for me. Community College may not seem like the most glamorous school with different groups or clubs that you can join. And they do not have nap pods like some universities, but I am so grateful to be starting my education off at Citrus College. I am currently coming towards the end of my first semester at school and it felt like all the time I have been spending going to school has gone by almost in the blink of an eye. I have loved every bit of my experience at Citrus College because of the classes I am taking and the assets my school provides.
My community college has provided me with a wide variety or resources that can help me at any time during my education. Being a student with a weak academic history throughout high school I value these resources and use them in my favor. Using these resources, I have had the best grades I have ever had in the past four years. Having centers and buildings where I can go and ask as many questions as I want to help me get the answers I need is the reason I am doing so well. They also provide workshops that help with researching tips and ideas and help with formatting papers for virtually any class. They are short and informational, which I appreciate because if I don’t have school or work, I can go to the campus and just spend one hour learning something that can help me with all my classes.
I am very grateful for my professors because they continually challenge me every class. They are patient with my frequent questions and support my personal ideas with the information given. They are enthusiastic when they teach which surprised me my first week. I thought it was just because it was the first week and they wanted people to be interested and excited to be a part of the class and eventually they would die down and become monotone during their lectures. To this day they still bring that energy and excitement to their lessons and I appreciate that immensely. I do enjoy learning; I believe intelligence is powerful and attractive so having these enthusiastic hard working teachers makes me even more excited to go to my classes and work hard also.
The best part of any college experience is the freedom to learn. I have the opportunity to take any class I want, whenever I want. Of course, I have courses that I will need to take for my major but counselors always recommend taking an extracurricular course to ease the stress. I am able to take dance classes or swim classes. Or I can learn the history of rock and roll if I decided to. My point is, I am not forced into anything. It is ultimately my decision what my educational path is. I decide my stress level, I decide success or failure. It is all up to me, I have that freedom.
I am just in the beginning of my college experience. I am a Kinesiology major and I will be attending school for a while. Starting off my experience like this, eager, excited, and very ambitious and having already experienced the tools college has provided for its students makes me excited for the years to come at different schools that I will attend. I know that when I transfer to either a Cal State or University I will have an even bigger variety of resources and more professors that will keep me excited and intrigued throughout my education. I look forward to study groups, bigger libraries, and more writing cafes and workshops. I value my education more than anything and if I continue having these great experiences throughout the rest of my years in school, these next several years will fly by.
