Is there a subject for me? by sarah - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed , I would regret all the times I have disrespected a teacher. If roles were reversed, I would understand the frustration caused by the looks of confusion on my students faces. I could imagine the blank stares of not understanding , looking at me , waiting to be taught something that was only going to go in one ear, and out through the other. Now if roles were reversed which teacher would I be? There's math , science, history , literature , the list goes on and on.
Doing math is a breeze … but teaching it that's a whole different story . I am one of those people that math comes easy to , but ask me how to explain, and help others, my mind becomes blank. I try to explain to my best knowledge, only to get even more confused looks on there face. I wouldn't have the words or numbers to describe how to add variables, and do triangle theorems . Math would not be the subject for me to teach.
My freshman year I was given a c in Biology, now it's not that I didn't try because I spent countless of hours trying to figure out what the teacher was talking about. He seemed like a pretty good teacher , explaining everything like he knew it off the top of his mind. Yet still he couldn't get us to know what he knew. Our class average that your was very low, but if i was the teacher I'm sure the average would manage to get even lower. Could you imagine trying to teach something you don't even understand yourself? Biology wouldn't work out either .
History, taking it back in time. Getting learn what happened hundreds of years befor you were even born. Now history is something where if you do not study the material, there's no way for you to know it. You have to make history fun , and enjoyable or what's the point of knowing it. As a teacher you need creativity, and passion to the subject. Things I’d someday like to have, but am currently lacking. History teachers have a hard job, making things that may not spark everyone's minds, some how strike a spark. History is off the list.
When looking at the question, if roles were reversed, what subject would i teach , I thought this would be a breeze what a simple question. I have gained so much respect for teachers just thinking of what subject would I teach , and actually be successful at, I knew
I lacked a connection with the subject that the teachers have , and lacked that passion to teach.
