I Plan to Embrace the Opportunity by Sarah - September 2016 Scholarship Essay

There is an enormous amount of attention being given to next year. It seems like every adult I encounter asks me what I plan to do next year. People ask me where I want to go to college and if my college applications are complete. Several adults have even inquired about what I want to be after college. People have good intentions and are trying to show interest and I appreciate it. I just wish that people would show more interest in what I plan to do this year. It is going to be an awesome year and I have so much that I am looking forward to. This is my senior year and my plan is work hard, finish strong and enjoy every single day until graduation. So when asked what one thing I plan to do to make it all happen I simply say, “I plan to embrace the opportunity.”

Academic success has been a goal of mine since the first grade. I never skip out on a chance to learn and I set the bar high. As a result, I have a 3.96 accumulative grade point average and am currently ranked twenty-three out of three hundred and three in my class. By year end, I plan to break into the top twenty. My class schedule has always been rigorous and even as a senior I took the hardest classes available to me. I believe in pushing myself and my senior year is no time to let up. If I work my plan, and stay the course, I can finish strong. It’s not only about recognizing the opportunities available to me but, taking full advantage of them.

School is not all about academics. I have learned so much about leadership, negotiation and teamwork while in high school. These are the skills that aren’t taught in classroom, but are needed in life. Skills like this are learned on the practice field and in the lunch line. It’s about learning to work with others and being a champion for those that need it most. In high school, I have been fortunate to meet so many people and share experiences with others that I would probably never have met if we didn’t share a bus ride or math class. In the spirit of embracing opportunities, I will continue to meet new people and try new things. I will reach out to incoming freshman and even try a hot school lunch because I have never had it. I will embrace opportunities in and out of the classroom because high school isn’t over yet. In fact, I think the best year yet is just getting under way.

I have been going to public school for more than twelve years. My experience has taught me that the more I volunteer, study and get involved the more opportunities there are. Senior year will be memorable and productive if I continue to do all of those things and I will. This year will be all about embracing opportunities, working hard, finishing strong and enjoying every single day until graduation.
