New Year, Better Me by Sara - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

I pride myself on being a good student and earning good grades, but as my senior year draws to a close, finding the motivation to study and continue to achieve at such a high level is getting hard. I will not let this hold me back. I have told myself for my entire high school career that I will not be the student who slacks off senior year; I am determined to finish strong. Therefore, my New Year’s resolution is to get motivated so I can be proud of the way I finished my senior year and set myself up for academic success in the future.
All the learning that I will do for the rest of the year will help me establish a better educational foundation for my studies in college. My AP biology class will provide the groundwork for my knowledge in biology as I work along the Pre-Medical track in college. By doing well in this class now, I can start learning about all of the topics I will need to know for the next 8 years of college and medical school. Additionally, other classes I take such as AP US History or AP Psychology can help me work toward earning college credit before I even begin my first college semester. By doing well in these classes, I can save both time and money in college by placing out of general education classes and instead filling my schedule with classes that I find more intriguing or that align more closely with my major of choice. Also, entering college with credit earned in high school means that I would need to pay for fewer courses to graduate.
By remembering these facts, I can keep in mind how important the end of my senior year still is. I want to end with solid grades and be beter prepared to enter college in the fall. Every time I begin to lose motivation or feel myself threatening to fall into the dreaded senior slump, I will think of the true importance of my senior year. The purpose of high school is not only to create a strong resume to gain entrance to a great college, but to become a better learner and a better student. With this mentality, I will be able to push myself to continue seeing the value of all of the information I am learning in high school and become a better, more engaged student along the way.
