Read Like No One's Watching by Sara - August 2018 Scholarship Essay

"Welcome back, Ladies and Gentlemen to Read Like No One's Watching! I'm your host, Sara Armstrong. In today's episode, we are going to explore the colorfully explosive world of Jandy Nelson and explore an American classic. Gatsby truly was great! Sniffle. Anyway, let's get started! Stay tuned at the end for an exclusive interview with the legendary J.K. Rowling. Go Ravenclaw!"

This is how I would start my very own podcast, Read Like No One's Watching. As an avid podcast listener myself, I often search for book podcasts that explore modern literature as well as the classics, but sadly, the podcasters of the world seemed to have fallen short. As the host, I would uncover new Young Adult novels, as that is one of my favorite genres, and explore the worlds of iconic characters who have become legends through coming of age: Sodapop and the Outsiders gang, Holden Caulfield, Huckleberry Finn, and the boys of the Lord of the Flies. These characters became instant classics by their authors and have remained prevalent as guides to growing up. Listeners of the podcast world who also happen to be book nerds, like myself, would undoubtedly love the analysis and break down of their favorite characters which include, but is not limited to the classics. As previously mentioned, Jandy Nelson, who is the author of two impeccable Young Adult novels has formulated characters that will be remembered forever for their liveliness and transformations from child to adult. Her work would most definitely be mentioned in Read Like No One's Watching! More well-known books will also be featured such as those of John Green and Becky Albertalli.
Read Like No One's Watching not only uncovers young adult novels, but classics that fall within the romance and even dystopian science fiction genres. Romance such as the many works of the beloved Jane Austen and Bronte Sisters would be explored. Their ability for endless analyzation would spill into the podcasts and last forever. Despite being an absolute fool for classic romance novels, the podcast would also appreciate the great works of Mary Shelley and George Orwell. There would even be a special episode exclusively for the irony and horror of Fahrenheit 451.
Lastly, the podcast must feature exclusive interviews with the listeners' favorite authors. I would ensure key speakers like the well-known George R. R. Martin, Stephen King, Jenny Han, Stephanie Perkins, Angie Thomas and James Patterson. Inclusivity is key and a wide variety of authors from different genres would be interviewed.
My podcast would have a little taste of every novel. The endless pages of literature would facilitate hours of podcast and intrigue for listeners. I believe everyone should be proud of reading. It is not only educational, but enjoyable and simply fascinating. It allows someone to explore different worlds, walk in another person’s shoes, and learn things they never could before. Every episode would end with...

"That's all from my corner of the world. Don't forget to tune in next week and Read Like No One's Watching!"
