Make Them Proud by Saniya - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Life has a way of putting things in perspective just by waking up every day. One day could be horrible, nothing going right, friends not talking to you, a bad break up. We can have the courage to keep getting up every day or we can give up. Giving up for me was an option at one time in my life. I had experienced so many losses and thought I could not take anymore. I knew I had educational goals that I wanted to achieve but no energy or determination to work towards them. Through success, courage, and education I was able to pull myself up by my bootstraps and turn things around. I wanted to find a way to make my family proud. I wanted to be proud of myself and what I had accomplished, or what I was going to accomplish and a change had to come.
I grew by educating myself on depression and how to overcome it. I knew that there was better out there for me, but I could not find it in my bed with my head stuffed in my pillow. I had the courage to make a drastic change, and I am happy I did. I reached deep down inside and asked myself if this is what I wanted my life to look like. Is this what my loved ones who are no longer with me would want for me?
As I educated myself on mental health issues, I knew that not only could I get better, but I could help others. I began to educate others by telling my story and how I was in a dark place, I helped many who looked like me and felt like me. Now we are all on a journey to becoming successful, courageous people. It does not happen overnight but with support it will happen.
Graduating from college is one of the biggest educational goals I have for myself, but giving back to others is what I want to do with my educational success. I would love to start a nonprofit where I can help and support young people to be great and push through the tough times. Tough times will come and having support during that time is so important and can be the difference between life and death. I am going to make them proud while I support others, this is my goal, and I know I will reach it.
