Computer Science: a Hobby to Future Career by Samuel - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have chosen to get a degree in Computer Science as a transfer student from community college. I’ve been interested in programming since around 4th grade, where I used Scratch to create simple games using blocks of code. I enjoy it because it involves logic, problem solving, math, three things that I am pretty good at and enjoy. My interest never faded, and in middle school I took an app development class.

When I reached High School, I took the first computer science course with my teacher Mr. Yee, who is one of the most influential adults I have met in my life. I hadn’t planned to go into computer science yet, but after taking my first class with him my goal was to go to college for computer science and make that my career.

His classes were very challenging and advanced, and I was lucky to have the opportunity to take 5: CS1, AP CSA, Game Programming, Web programming, and Machine learning. We learned advanced concepts that most high school students don’t even get the opportunity to touch, such as client server connections in Web Programming and neural networks in Machine Learning. These classes are such a massive advantage, a head start over others also interested in CS. I am lucky to have been given this opportunity and I am determined to not let it go to waste.

Mr. Yee and his classes are what solidified my decision to go into the field of CS. In my junior year I made the decision to save money and go to MiraCosta community college, where I will get my associates in computer science and then transfer to another school, getting my bachelors.
