Communication: The Key to Success by Samuel - December 2017 Scholarship Essay

Any interaction between two parties for an extended period will most certainly contain some conflicts. However, the cause of these conflicts is often due to a lack of effective communication by one or many parties. With my life, my goal is to focus on informing people on a vast array of topics to hence decrease the amount of conflicts around me. Hopefully, my awareness and ability to communicate effectively allow myself to interact more effectively with groups.
As I have gone through four years of high school and my first semester of college, I realize the importance of effective communication. Any student who has participated in a group project knows the struggles of communicating responsibilities to group members. Throughout my education, I have always been in leadership positions. In high school I was the president of my National Honor Society- a group focused on 4 pillars: scholarship, service, leadership and character. I led over 200 students advising service projects, organizing service opportunities and conducting my own food drive for a local food pantry. The largest issue I addressed while president was a lack of communication. I prided myself on always distributing information as quickly and as effectively as possible. This allows myself, the other board members and the other members of NHS to be able to know about all events and relevant information. This concept transfers to school projects. The first step to success is creating an avenue of communication whether it be group chats, meetings or any other means of communication. The second step is informing all members of their responsibilities so that all expectations are upfront and presented with plenty of time to complete said obligations. The last step is to remind and constantly make the expectations known. Reminders, texts or any form of weekly communication is crucial to the success of the project. I value all the lessons I learned from my NHS presidential experience as it has made me a more effective communicator.
The importance of communication has resonated with me and I have decided to major in Business Analytics and Information Systems. These majors are largely based on collecting data, analyzing data to identify trends or patterns, and then communicate my findings to those people who need this information. In the business world, communication is the means of all success. If communication is lacking often the business platform is lacking. Effective communication is the key to a successful business as it allows information to be distributed to all personnel. From my past experiences, I have chosen a field of study that largely relies on the effectiveness of communication.
As I have progressed through my education, I have identified the importance of communication. Information that is crucial for others to know, must be communicated effectively to make completing all desired tasks possible. It truly is the source and key to all success whether it be a school project, in the workplace or simply living an active lifestyle.
