Netflix: The Killer of Grades. by Samuel - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
To my fellow college undergraduates who are attending school, this is my advice: turn off Netflix, and go to bed. I have found, whether it be date night or simply enjoying some unwind time, that staying up late to watch movies or play video games is one of the most prevalent killers of grades. I know, I know; it's truly addicting. However; we cannot expect to become successful surgeons, lawyers, and astronaughts by sitting on our couches watching the latest season of "Kardashions."
Since this is easier said than done however, I will give out some ideas that might help remind us all to hold to a more strict regiment of sleep. We all have cell phones, right? I'm assuming most of our cell phones have alarm clocks on them; simply set a 9:30 PM alarm and faithfully obey it's command. Another idea that I have personally found to be effective is having a family member, or room mate, remind you faithfully to turn off the TV. Personally, I asked my room mate to punch me in the arm every five minutes after 9:30 I'm not in bed: I highly recommend this form of Pavlovian conditioning.
Perhaps some of you run into the common problem of, "I'm just laying awake in my bed. I might as well watch some TV." This line of thinking is just as dangerous as not studying at all. Stay in bed, even at the expense of your own boredom. If you feel that you wont sleep soon, drink some warm milk with nutmeg; the hormones in the milk will release Triptophan in your brain, and help induce sleep. Though it's not clinically proven, many individuals find this method of sleep aid very effective.
No matter what your remedy; whether it be warm milk, or boredom: sleep is imperative if you want to succeed in school. Find what works for you, but above all: stay away from Netflix!
