A Place of Ingenuity by Samiyah - April 2023 Scholarship Essay

I would be selfish if I centered myself around all this money. But I also would not be human if I did not find any pleasure from what I spent my money on. So, if I had an unlimited amount of time and money there are a couple of things that I could see myself joyfully doing. Firstly, I would dedicate my time to traveling the world in a camper while in hopes of incorporating multiple hobby centers around the world. We are now living in a society where we are not fully able to explore who we are from deep inside. This generation gets so consumed in the physical things that are happening around them they lose touch with themselves. Constantly consumed with school from the age six up until..., to being too consumed by social media which is influenced by the materialistic things in life. Not being able to answer the simple question, "what do you like to Do?". Up until five months ago, I was not able to name any activity of interest. other than responding with "I run track" because that was all I knew. I was not exposed to many other non-sports related hobbies, unless for a required class to take for credits. In communities you come across many facilities that allow the kids to interact with one another outside of school as well as show their competitive nature. Participating in the common sports, but how often does one get to use their creativity or engage in an activity that promotes mindfulness. So, my plan would be to build hobby centers around different cities and states, where I lived, we called them "Boys and Girls Clubs", but my centers would be called "Exploring You". At these centers the main focus would be creating a space where children are able to explore their interests. Whether it is as complex as learning to bake and decorate a cake or being able to take trips to take recreational trips. There would be many different programs that children would be able to pick from. Aside from the common sports, some hobbies I would incorporate are but not limited to gardening, sewing, crocheting, baking/ cooking classes, and Camping programs that open up an opportunity to let children see the world and explore reality.
With these volunteer opportunities, I believe the Exploring You project would add many benefits in communities. I mentioned having gardening programs and sewing, crocheting, camping etc. I would plan events where the community could be involved or even just to watch. Imagine a fashion show, prizes for winners with the most creative designs, little fashion models, Appetizers cooked by the little chefs of our kitchen, using ingredients picked just from our garden outside grown and picked by our local mini farmers. Just a place where children are able to step away from school and home and unwind/ regather themselves. A place where you genuinely want to be.
