It's warm buttery delight aroma left a trace which traveled through the guard railings and delighted the neighborhood. It’s drippings of southern lemon glaze freshly infused my brother and I’s nostrils to the point of salivation. It was almost angelic and my desires to have a slice had me driveling over my words. “Mom can’t I?...But right now seems…., well maybe just a bit?” I mumbled obnoxiously as I begged my mother for a slice of her famous freshly baked lemon glazed pound cake.
As a six-year-old, I wanted to be a baker. Not just any baker, but the coolest baker around. I grew up near Cuban pastry shops, where everything was made fresh and to order. From Guava Pastries to powdered sugared churros, sweets seemed like everything to me and more. I guess all my senses were not as equally balanced as they should have been, now that I am twenty and more informed on the brain as a neuroscientist. I am very fortunate that my mother is the best baker and chef on the planet. I grew up watching with her the beginning episodes of America’s Test Kitchen on the food network channel. Then I turned seven and space seemed like a cool idea. “I wonder if fried Oreos taste better in zero gravity?” These were the thoughts I ruminated on at the age of six and three quarters.
