The Road by Samantha - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

The Road by Cormac McCarthy is the best book I have ever read because of the imagery and how real the book seems to be. Along the road a young boy is forced to go through burnt down America with only his father and a shopping cart. They had to find their own food and make their way to the south or they would die. The novel intrigues you and makes you want to keep reading. The son’s mother killed herself in front of him because she did not want to deal with the struggle. The father dies towards the end of they book but the son meets a family and proceeds on with them and make it to the end. This book I would recommend to anyone who is willing to enjoy a good book. I am usually not a huge fan of reading and I could not put this book down. I finished it in four days! I chose this book because it is a literary merit and my A.P. English teacher suggested it to me. McCarthy is a great author and knows exactly how to grab the reader’s attention. His word choice and diction is absolutely amazing and has a way of flowing every word together. His diction may be hard to understand but the way he ties it in is easy to understand. Overall, this book is the best book ever and anyone who likes to read should read this book.
