The Importance of College by Samantha - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
My Grandfather did not have the money to pursue a college education. He worked as a butcher to provide for his family. As my father grew up his father instilled in him how important education was. My grandfather was beyond proud of my father when he graduated college. He always told him how proud he was that he was using his knowledge to make money.
My father is a teacher, he has helped me with my school work since I was a kid. For my birthday he would bring me into his classroom and I would love the opportunity to watch him with his students. Growing up he would tell me stories about how some of the students did not have the best lives at home. He told me that for some of them going to class was the best part of their day. For some of them lunch in the cafeteria was their only meal. Hearing about this I always wanted to help them. I would give my father clothes that I had that he would give to students he knew did not have much and me and my mother would send snacks and extra supplies in with him.
He inspired me to pursue a career in education. I want the opportunity to go above and beyond for my students and give them the best chance of being successful. A scholarship will help me pay for my degree and help me achieve my goals.
Currently, I work as a camp counselor. My coworkers and bosses have taught me an abundance of techniques for working with children and I hope to apply them as a teacher. I am also taking classes at my high school which teach me how to make lesson plans and work with students one on one. I hope that I can inspire my students and prepare them as much as I can to achieve their goals.
