Don't Wait by Samantha - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

As an incoming freshman, high school life is very intimidating. Not only are you surrounded by a vast amount of people you don't know and who are much older than you, but everything you do starts to count now. While this can be intimidating, don't fear it. The one piece of advice I would give to an incoming freshman is to not wait to get involved.

Getting involved in the activities provided by the school is the best way to overcome any fears. By getting involved you can make new friends with the upperclassmen and they won't appear intimidating anymore. You can also improve your grades due to the fact that when you feel you need to prove something to maintain your eligibility in the club, you will do whatever it takes to maintain your position.

Getting involved also helps one prepare for college. By involving myself my freshman year in clubs at the high school that deal with community service, I have created a lengthy resume that shows colleges I care about my community. Getting involved at an early age, prepared me for the future ahead. Community service through the schools has also taught me how to appreciate life and how to work hard for what you deserve. Pushing yourself to get involved teaches you diligence and admiration for others, which are valuable skills for college.

Applying yourself to a club or organization within your school will also bring up your self-esteem. Being a part of a club brings a sense of security and pride in your accomplishments after a task is finished. Creating that pride for yourself then allows you to carry that confidence out into the real world for college or job interviews.

Lastly, one should get involved for the pure reason that high school goes faster than you think. One day your a freshman creating new opportunities, and before you know it, you will be a high school senior who is grateful that they pushed themselves to be in clubs so create skills crucial for college and beyond.
