Be Yourself by Samantha - March 2019 Scholarship Essay
High school is one of the strangest times in someone’s life. There are times when it’s easy, times it’s hard, and sometimes it’s honestly boring. None of this is worth compromising your self-worth though. If I was guiding a tour of freshmen through my high school, I would tell them to be true to themselves. People tend to forget the importance of having your own personality in high school and fall into group of what they think is acceptable. It is vital to yourself that you don’t let go of what makes you special. Yes, it’s easier said than done, but it doesn’t have to be. An easy start is to not care what others think. If they think you’re lame because you don’t party, who cares! High school isn’t about that. High school is about making connections with friends, learning how the real world works, and just being a kid. You won’t get a chance to do these once you graduate. So just hold on to what makes you you. In a world of people trying to fit in, it helps to be the one to stand out.
Being unique isn’t a bad thing. I can honestly say, no one is going to care if you have wild hair, wacky clothes, or speak your mind. Being able to stand out and up for your beliefs is so important in this day and age. If you want to stand up for an injustice, don’t be afraid to be ridiculed. Everyone is judge for almost all they do in everyday life, so you might as well make the most of it. Losing your sense of self is one thing, but losing your voice is much worse. Don’t worry about what others think, but also don’t think poorly of others. Everyone has an opinion and everyone opinion matters.
This leads me to my final statement. Have self control. Don’t lash out when you disagree with someone or are faced with confrontation. This achieves absolutely nothing. Be able to stay organized (for the most part), do your homework, be nice to your parents and teachers. If you don’t learn self control in high school, you never will. It’s not hard, just be responsible for your actions.
