The History of Our Society by Samantha - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

I have always loved learning new things; whether it be from books, YouTube, or in-depth conversations. However, my favorite place for gaining knowledge has always been school. Specifically: lectures. Lectures are what have fueled my passion for history, archaeology, and anthropology. I have always wanted to become a college professor, it is a serious aspiration of mine. If had the opportunity to become a professor, I would love to instruct archaeology. Archaeology would be my first choice because I think it's important to know our human history and to acknowledge where our civilization started from.
Archaeology opens up our understanding and views of humanity’s past. Like I previously stated, it can help us understand how modern civilization came to be, it can help us understand our combined evolution, and it can give us examples of how our ancestors survived before .written language was invented. Archaeology is a real life textbook, where instead of seeing pictures on pages, anyone can see artifacts in museums. Museums bring artifacts into the real world, making them feel more real and can open up doors for curiosity. Archaeology can put history into perspective in new ways that can intrigue modern-day people. Instead of flippant facts on paper, they’re tangible objects related to events that completely altered history. No matter how small or insignificant these pieces of historical evidence may appear, they’re the reason why I find archaeology so interesting.
I would want to teach archaeology because it’s a very hands-on field. I believe that because of its hands-on nature, it would get students more motivated and engaged in the subject matter. Let’s be honest: every student's worst nightmare is a boring class. Field schools are a perfect example of this, which most subjects don’t have, they allow student to actually become familiar with the profession to see if it’s something they’d like to continue to pursue. It can be grueling hard work, but when the excavation goes well, it’s a truly fulfilling experience.
In conclusion, I would like to teach archaeology because it connects us to our past in a way no other subject can, it can let you touch our history. Archaeology gives students the ability to study both culture and objects, which defines current society and humanity’s past. Without this undeniably valuable information, humanity would surely repeat it’s prior mistakes, and that's what makes archaeology so important to teach.
