Educational Advice That Changed My Way Of Thinking by Samantha - May 2014 Scholarship Essay
As the years go by, from Kindergarten all the way up to college, you start having a different perspective of where you visualize yourself in life. The typical idea of a six year old could aspire himself or herself of becoming an astronaut or a pop singer, whereas a eighteen year old figures out his or her strengths academically and moves forward with further aspirations.
As for me, at the age of six, I had always dreamed of becoming a princess. Having an adolescent mind, I was unaware that this was not an actual profession, I still had every hope of being featured in a fairytale book. Of course these thoughts started to fade as I reached the age of eight when I found out these princesses were only a figment of Disney imagination characters with wigs and strange voices. I started to think twice about what I was capable of achieving and asking myself what I could see myself pursuing.
I remember starting my first day of high school. That was the most frightening day of my life. I did not now anyone and did not know where to go if I needed any help with my studies. As I started to get to know the teachers, I started branching out to more academic advisors in the main office. I spoke to the secretary about my fear, the fear of failure. She looked at me and gave me the best advice I have ever been given by anyone at the school. She told me "you miss 100% of the chances you do not take, and it is okay if it takes a while. Nothing worth having comes easy". This day was the day that changed my way of thinking.
Since then, I have aspired to become a Neo natal nurse. I want to be able to give hope to someone else, a kind of hope I was given. The hope that anything is possible and it is okay to start small and work your way up. I want to be able to change multiple life's, one life at a time.
