Singing a Different Tune by Salina - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
For 2016 I’ve resolved to have a different mindset when it comes to my classes. I certainly haven’t done poorly in school so far, and I’ve had to combat some medical and family problems that challenged my academic performance, but I also think I can be a better student. There were some classes I was required to take (mostly general education requirements) that I didn’t think were important to the career I saw for myself. Since I didn’t think I’d ever use the information I learned, I didn’t really care about learning it. Instead, my concern was simply obtaining a B or higher.
I’ve realized that this mindset was detrimental to my grades and my education. I had forgotten the reason why I’m in school, and why I chose the University of Maryland. I’m here for a quality education from professors who are experienced in their fields, because I want to be the best wildlife professional I can be. From now on, I won’t treat any class like I shouldn’t be in it. I will have faith that the university thinks that the classes required to complete my major are pertinent to my career path. I will attend class, complete assignments, and study for exams not for the grade, but for the knowledge I will obtain.
