Passion for beauty, creative nature with vision, persistent commitment with a “can do” attitude, and good listening skills are all characteristics and virtues of being a cosmetologist. A good cosmetologist can bring a vision wrapped up in another person’s head to light. This is why I will head to Hays Academy of Hair Design in the fall to obtain my cosmetology and nail technician license. I will have to complete 1500 hours of school work where I will have instructors help fine-tune my craft by teaching me how to find my already creative nature.
Cosmetology allows me to bring out my creative side. I love how it allows me to be one-on-one with people and be hands-on all the time. My friends allowing me to do their nails and hair has granted me some experience that I can bring with me to college. Not all cosmetologists only do hair, they work on the whole person from skincare to masterpieces of art on tiny canvas called fingernails. The most important part about becoming a cosmetologist is connecting with people. I have to learn to earn respect and make people feel comfortable with themselves. Communication is going to be a key component in my career path as I have to be able to get the client to tell me what vision they have in their mind. I will do this by asking questions and more questions. The more I ask, the more the client will trust me and return to my chair. In cosmetology, if I don’t have someone sitting in my chair I don’t get paid. I am up for the challenge, as I have had the opportunity to have a “can do “ attitude all through my high school career. I have been actively involved in athletic activities and organizational clubs where I have had to work with different people but where I have learned most of my people skills is through my job as a lifeguard. I know how to work and I will have to work to bring clients into my business. I know that my goals will come to vision because I have a strong work ethic, as well as determination and passion for the field.
My ultimate goal is to become a business owner and run my beauty salon. This will take a detailed business plan as I will have to be organized and committed to making sure the salon is profitable. There is a wide range of opportunities offered to those who pursue a career in cosmetology. As a cosmetologist, I can expect to be part of a growing industry in both hair and skin care, it will help me learn a variety of skills, I will be able to create long-lasting friendships, and have a flexible schedule.
Becoming a licensed cosmetologist will come with ups and downs. As a competitive and passionate person, I will push myself every day. My dedication and persistence will help carry me through challenges. I need to attain my goals to help women and men of all ages feel a sense of love and beauty. Only some people have access to regularly paint their nails or be able to make themselves feel good about themselves. Opening up my salon would empower me to help those feel beautiful.
