Leadership Skills and its Relevance to College Success by Sagar - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leaders are those who can inspire others to do something that they would not be motivated to do on their own. They have great time management skills, organization, efficiency in planning, and can solve problems. Gaining leadership skills while in college are essential building blocks for success after college. Leadership skills are vital for success in one’s career. However, lacking leadership skills will not hold one back from succeeding in college.

One must simply have great time management skills and study well for exams to be successful in college. Students can participate in extra-curricular activities, research, intramurals, community service, and various other activities without taking on any leadership positions. I personally know several students who did not do anything but study and were still accepted into graduate school without taking on any leadership roles. Your success in college is what you make of it.
However, imagine being in a managerial position, whether as a president for a student club or chief marketing officer of a company without having any leadership skills. You would not be able to get anyone to listen to you, inspire and motivate others to do their jobs, and you would have a total lack of confidence in what you do.

Those who pursue leadership roles in college will get ahead in their careers and make a difference in their field and community. There are many ways to become a leader. Those who lead others in school projects, organize community service events, participate on executive boards of school organizations, and motivate teammates in sports competitions all show characteristics of a leader.

Those who gain leadership skills will excel because they seek ways to make a positive impact to those around them and in the community. They will do well in their careers, have great relationships with other people, and will inspire others to take initiative in one’s endeavors. One can merely have success in college by making good grades without having any leadership skills. However, one must think about how their leadership skills can affect their life and those around them after college.
