Walking out of the competition room, I take a deep breath and assure myself that I did the best I could and obviously can’t change the past. I’m always surprised by my ability to confidently talk to a complete stranger about a topic in the business world. I may not exactly remember the few minutes I spent competing but will always remember the experience. Sometimes I question whether all the hours I spend outside of school for this activity are really worth it as I realize the significance. FBLA and DECA have both taught me immense skills in presenting myself as a confident person. Healthy competition encourages students to bring out their best. Participating in competitions, social events, and networking through it allow students to gain stronger communication skills to benefit from the experience.
Even though it may seem that these activities are only for students interested in business, they have a lot more to offer and teach. As they are time-consuming and often need guidance, having them as a required class would be easier for students to manage. Furthermore, conducting presentations are not often part of class curriculum but a class like this would allow students to improve upon those skills as well. This class could additionally include teaching about finance and business cultivating different aspects of our economy and further aiding with competition preparation. It’s important for students to be introduced to real-world concepts in school as an important part of adulting is learning how to manage your money.
