From Lazy to Academically Motivated by Sabrina - January 2022 Scholarship Essay

2021 was a hard year for many. Online school, remote work, businesses closing, etc. How could anybody learn or strengthen in times like these? As impossible as it seems, it is very much possible. How do I know this? Well, because I’ve strengthened myself over the past year, academically and physically.
Online school was awful for me. First quarter of online school, I didn’t pay attention, didn’t do my homework, and just slept throughout the day, basically not caring about school. As a junior in high school, it’s very important to care about your school work and get stuff done, for you are going to college in the next year or two. And as I saw my grades slip, that reality hit me. I began to realize I needed to make a change or else I would never get into college and would never get a good degree. So, I made that change.
I began to study and pay attention during school. I worked so hard that my brain began to actually hold information. In the past, I would never be able to hold information and I had a very hard time learning as fast as the other kids. But as I began to study and do much needed research on many different topics, I began to actually learn instead of just listening to the teacher and playing on my phone. And once remote learning was over and everybody went back to in-person schooling, the tactics of studying and being mentally ready to learn really helped me. I started becoming a straight A student and have been accepted into one of my top colleges!
So, in the end, it is possible to strengthen yourself during hard times. Whether it’s mentally, physically, or academically. We just need to realize that this change isn’t going to come unless we do something about it. I went from a lazy, non-academically motivated student to a student who can finally breathe when a test is handed to them and to finally be able to focus and learn during school by pushing myself to my limits everyday. You have to be the one to push yourself to become the best version of you, no matter how hard it is. Whatever it is you are trying to change, it will never be easy, however, as long as you push yourself, you will always be able to accomplish anything.
