Read the Book, Not the Cover by Sabrina - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

Have you ever heard the term, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”? It means don’t judge something by the way it looks or its label. This includes people. When you get into high school you’re on the lookout for new friends, new companions, but you never think, the best people can come from the most unique places.

Usually you will want to go to the most popular table and sit with the “cool kids”, but why make friends with people just for social status. Will they really be friends? Will they really be there for you when you need them? Be there for you when you’re in trouble and need help or just a hug? Many people lose contact with their friends after high school, but with that said were they even friends in the first place? You’ll see that the girl sitting next to you in your math class that has helped you out with your equations and laughed with you will remember you more than the people with the highest social status. Social status does not matter. Being cool will not give you true friends, being nice and treating everyone equally will. Whether the high social class in high school thinks the people you talk with are dumb or gross, does not depict who they really are. The grossest person may just be a kid who has parents that neglect him or financial issues, and in reality he’s probably one of the sweetest people you have ever met. The emo girl who sits alone in the lunch room might be the brightest person you have ever met and has the type of smile that can light up your day, maybe even your world. The nerd that always gets picked on may be a hero that is just protecting his friends because he treasures them, just like anyone would treasure a friend. The most popular kids might look the kindest, but be the bullies of the school.

Just because someone is labeled as a nerd, prep, or scene kid, it does not depict what type of person they truly are. Everyone is different. So take your time to get to know each and every one of them, because you will find who your true friends really are, and the people really worth sticking by.
