The Importance of Dreams by Sabrina - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

We all remember having dreams at some point in our lives—many which go as far back as early childhood. Whether you were awake or sleeping for these particular dreams, they still made you yearn for something slightly out of reach. You could have dreamt of superpowers or of a place you would love to see. These dreams make us who we are, like tiny notches in our heart that point us towards the things we want—even if what we desire is not attainable in our world. As we get older, our dreams shift to visions for the future. For some, this means running a business like an empire, boarding a spaceship to land on the moon, or even living in the White House as the next president of the United States.
If you’re most people, then you probably won’t know what it is you want by the time you finish elementary school. Or even high school. You might have an idea, but the future is definitely uncertain. Something that many of these aspirations have in common is the need for further education. By continuing to acquire knowledge—at school or otherwise—you become informed about many different aspects of the world, like history, science, art, and even math. Chances are, you might not enjoy all of these subjects, but knowing you made an effort says a lot about who you are. The subjects you learn about in school are the groundwork for your general knowledge and discovery of passions you didn’t know you had.
An education will open doors for you, even before you know you want them open. It allows you the opportunity to dream big because if you have the education and qualifications, the careers and goals you aspire for can easily be attained. All it takes is determination, and putting your learned skills to use. For this reason, every child with a dream should pursue their education with enthusiasm and intensity, because everything you learn will become a part of you and your future. Even the children who claim to have no dreams should partake in this endeavor, because knowledge is powerful enough to show you the contrary.
