Learning to be Successful by Sabrina - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

I believe that one class that many students take for granted is the introduction to college course. The one I am taking in my first semester is called "How to Become a Successful College Student." It has taught me exactly what it says in the title. I am learning how to become successful because of the skills that are presented in this course.
I would love to be able to teach others how to develop and use these skills. It is not only going to be useful in this specific class, but it will help throughout your college years as well as your career. I have experienced the difference in my study habits and have earned better grades than I ever thought was possible. The class provides you with the ability to develop skills such as goal setting, writing, team work, time management, and accountability.
Some of the lessons can be quite difficult in an online setting. I have found that the most difficult ones are in fact the most rewarding. Over the past two weeks, I have been facing the most difficult task of the course so far. The assignment was to work with 5 other team members to put together a power point about an assigned topic. Within the first week, I was elected the team leader.
Becoming the team leader was not something I was expecting. I was not confident in having others depend on me for their grade. Throughout the process, I had to develop my communication skills, my ability to motivate others, and enforce the rules. Enforcing rules was by far the most difficult challenge. I had to find a balance between sounding too stern and being a complete push over. In the end, I believe our outcome was better than I could have imagined.
I would love the opportunity to teach this class. Even though most students don't seem to take it seriously, the ones that do come out as a better version of themselves. I want other students to experience the improvement that I have by taking this course. I can testify that the decision to make "Becoming a Successful Student" a required course has the potential to be beneficial to all students.
