Majoring in Graphic Design by Ryan - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

I’ve always loved art. When I think of my future career, I always imagine myself enjoying my job. It’s been a personal goal to get a job that I can enjoy doing for over twenty years despite the salary. With art being a passion of mine, I can see myself being captivated by that field of work. Since my freshman year of high school, art was the passion I knew I wanted to pursue. However, inflation in the U.S. cannot be ignored and a career in art doesn’t have high paying salaries. Because of this, I have looked into better paying jobs in the art profession. This would allow me to live a life that is well provided for, not only for me but my future family. I have since leaned toward the business side of graphic design. Graphic design has the art and the business aspect in it, meaning I will receive a decent salary and be able to work in an art profession.
People in my life have further persuaded me to major in graphic design or something in that field. My parents have been very supportive in what I have decided to major in, even if it has a lower paying salary than what my father would like for me. In the end, they support me in what I will do as long as I am happy in what I pursue. My high school art teacher has been a huge influence on why I want to go into the art field. He’s made me into the artist I am today, and I am currently in one of his art classes this spring semester of my senior year. He is there to remind me that I am a good artist and one of his best students. If I didn’t receive the compliments and praise for my art, I’d truly doubt my skills. I am so grateful for all the supporting people in my life that have helped me along my journey through art.
There are several majors in art, and I’ve tried to look into each and every one, but graphic design caught my attention over all of them. My major may change in college as I learn more about graphic design and experience what it would be like and overall if I like it. In college, I’ll also be learning about other art careers and paths that may fit me better than graphic design. Another reason I chose graphic design as my major is because designing has also been a huge passion for me. With both of these being passions of mine, I hope to find a job that holds both of my passions. As I start my college freshman year in the university of my choosing, I hope to stick with graphic design as I learn to design and piece together visual communication pieces.
