Key to my universe by Ryan - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

 From a young age I had always been interested in mechanics and building things, starting with working on small engines with my dad followed by years of buying, fixing, and selling numerous cars and motorcycles. These projects and others allowed me to gain experience with a varied range of vehicles, further fueling my interest in all things automotive.

As time passes and there are fewer and fewer classic vehicles on the road and in museums, the resources to preserve them become scarcer, and their historical significance grows. I believe the responsibility to preserve them for future generations becomes increasingly important. This is where my passion lies.

Through the Expanded Options program at Clackamas Academy of Industrial Science I was able to begin taking college courses for dual credit. In the spring of 2023 I graduated high school with 66 college credits, my CNC operator and Machine Tool Technology certificates. Currently I am pursuing an AAS in Machine Tool Technology at Clackamas Community College and will graduate in the spring of 2024.

I have determined that McPherson College in Kansas has an automotive restoration program that is the best in the nation. Although the program will require an additional four full years of school, I am confident McPherson is the conduit for me to refine my existing skills and acquire new ones. My goal is to pursue a career in a classic/antique automotive specific industry where I can combine my skills, certificates and degrees. A BA from McPherson will allow me to follow my passion and preserve these historic vehicles for future generations. In addition, their automotive restoration department has an excellent internship program, providing students with real-world experience and industry exposure which will assist me in locating my dream job.
