Put some sense into your dollars by Ryan - June 2018 Scholarship Essay

As I scanned the financial section of my school's class catalog to decide on a one semester class for sophomore year, a particular course caught my eye. The class, Dollars and Sense, pertained to personal finance and money management. My parents immediately recommended I take the class, although I was very hesitant. "What was the point?", I thought. Once I took the class, however, I gained a wealth of knowledge regarding how I should approach my money in the future. Dollars and Sense is necessary to all students, as it instructs on the domination of credit and the appeal of wealth.

In a world where credit has crept into every aspect of ordinary life, Dollars and sense is absolutely integral. When credit began in the 1920's it seemed revolutionary, and for a time it was. However widespread and frequent misuse developed credit into a monster, and was a chief factor in the stock market crash of 1929. Since this event the influence of credit has only exponentially expanded, leaving countless people in debt very easily. Young men and women often live paycheck-to-paycheck, which eventually forces them to resort to credit in order to pay for purchases, big or small. These purchases will accumulate and thus inflict massive debt on the user. Dollars and sense ensures students will be aware of these unfortunate facts and will be instructed on alternatives to evade credit at almost all costs. The concept of using paper money to purchase items will be expressed, as it guarantee they only spend the money that they have. Even with paper money, overspending is a major issue.

Dollars and sense will warn students of overspending and its ramifications. As a newly independent person, one may be tempted to buy several unnecessary items when they receive a fairly substantial amount of money. Many young athletes have received a paycheck for millions of dollars and within mere years have wasted all of their wealth away. Dave Ramsey, the famous financial advisor who provided the learning material for my Dollars and Sense course even became impoverished after acquiring a large sum of money. The array of cases where this occurs proves its widespread implications and how necessary it is in education. Dollars and Sense provides detailed knowledge concerning budget constructing and how much money should be allocated to a specific purpose. It presents ways that smart utilization of money can bring in even more wealth and ensure you live a healthy spending life simultaneously. Without this class, it will be difficult to control spending habits.

Dollars and Sense has the potential to assist so many teenagers in their newfound independence by informing them of credit and overspending. Now that I have my own car, I see the importance of money management. The costs of gas along with every other thing I must do accumulates very quickly, and every dollar counts. There is a very real chance that I could be completely broke without Dollars and Sense. Because of this course, I now know how to put some sense into my dollars.
