Advice For Younger Students by Ryan - April 2016 Scholarship Essay

My advice for younger students would be a very simple piece of advice, don't procrastinate. In my time during school, I struggled with motivation to complete assignments on time when the subject didn't hold my interest. I have learned that this is something you don't want to do first hand. It is always best to get work done either early or on time. When you are working on an assignment that is late, it tends to be rushed in a last ditch effort just to get the assignment complete. In addition to this, because your always playing catch up, you can fall be behind the classes learning path. Which then makes the day to day content of the class even more stressful. For me, as assignments would pile up, it became overwhelming to even try to work on them.

Here are two examples I would like to share. During my freshman year of high school, I took Algebra 1. Math had always been a strong subject for me so when I began to struggle I gave up quickly. My procrastination made it impossible to catch up and I failed the class. Because this class is a required subject, I had to repeat the class with under classman the following year. Next example: I took a high level Foreign language class. The language was French 4 & 5. I had done well with the previous three French classes. The content was easy to understand and the work seemed to come easy to me. This class proved to be much more difficult than I expected. Soon into the first month I was lost and put off much of the work until I had to complete it in order to pass. I was stressed out at home because of the overwhelming amount of work I had to do and completely lost every day in class. Sometimes when I think about the stress I caused myself it just makes me crazy.

Procrastinating won't get you anywhere but lost and frustrated. It can cause unecessary stress, limit your time to complete assignments with quality results or fail classes altogether. Fortunatly, there is help out there that you can take advantage of. The moment you start to feel lost, ask your friend or teacher for help. Guidance and guided study is another great place to find help. Don't get hung up on the inconvenience of staying after school. Believe me, staying after school is way better than repeating a class or spending all your time catching up at the end of the quarter.
