Focus on the Subject by Ruth - June 2019 Scholarship Essay

One day, the whole class came in and sat down before the bell rang. I was ready for the normal routine of looking at the bellwork on the screen and doing it. This day the screen was off and my teacher came in and had a chat with all of us about school. This advice has stuck with me throughout the school years and it still is. The advice she told us is to not go on the surface level of the subject we are learning in order to get a great grade but to dive into the subject that we are learning and really understand it.

I know that might seem strange at why she might be saying that since grades are part of what allows us to go to different colleges and opportunities in life. But she also said that the information we learn now can be applied to different areas of our life. She explained by saying the importance of education is to learn about a subject even if you love it or not. Grades are there in the grade book, but they do not define you. She gave a great example by showing that when she went to her 10-year reunion this person kept on saying how his grades were so great, but in reality, at that time he was unemployed. To the people he talked to it seemed strange because at that time most of his colleagues have started a family life and received the jobs of their dreams. She told us to stop stressing over the grade portion of school and have a passion for what you are learning because we won’t get a chance like this again.

This has made an impact on my education by allowing me to open my eyes and see why education is here for us. It made me really love to learn and grow in the subject that I am learning and to not just focus on my grades. Although I still care about my grades I do not focus on it as much as I have before. Even though my parents are still there to push me about my grades, her viewpoint has made me appreciate why education is there for us and that I need to take in every word of it because I may not get another opportunity like it. Especially, in high school where learning is fun and easier to understand. Also, people around the world undergo circumstances where they cannot express their love for education which is why it also made me appreciate the education around me.
