The Power of Creativity by Ruby - June 2024 Scholarship Essay
As a little girl, my art skills only had the potential for drawing stick figures with triangle dresses. In middle school, as my classmates stroke their paintbrush to replicate Bob Ross paintings, my canvas closely depicts blobs. My silly doodles were no match to others, so I concluded that I had no artistic abilities.
In high school, my world flipped when I discovered the opportunity to express my creative side digitally with Future Business Leaders of America. I competed in events ranging from Website Design to Electronic Career Portfolio. Researching how to design websites, magazines, and campaigns was when the right hemisphere of my brain got to work. From there, my interest in digital media allowed me to practice different skills: graphic design, photography, and online advertising. I found myself spending hours in front of a computer screen creating projects from scratch and editing photos. Gradually, by becoming the Public Relations officer of Future Business Leaders of America during my sophomore year, I devoted copious time designing various promotional content. This didn’t feel like a chore, but rather time dedicated to exploring my keen interests.
As the next step in my venture with digital media, I started an online jewelry business. Crystal, bead, crystal, bead, and repeat was the schedule I was accustomed to. Each jewelry piece required a post highlighting its features, so I experimented with multiple colors, backgrounds, and font choices. In the process, I developed my art style, reflected in my jewelry’s aesthetics and colorful packaging. Distinctively, I started receiving messages from young girls expressing their desire to start a business online. Having the opportunity to inspire others while practicing skills I loved was when my heart soared.
By finding the connection between business and digital media, I can express my creativity while pursuing my passions. Leaning toward modern styles, I can say that art constantly evolves. Creativity is exploring something new, so I believe that artistic abilities cannot be compared and measured with others. I can now conclude that my canvas was on a computer screen all along.
