Defiance by Roycelle - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Somebody said I was too old. Somebody said, "you never get paid what you're worth." Somebody said...In a society where it appears that 30+ years of experience no longer matter in the workplace: where employers smile at you, pat you on the back in appreciation for “all your accomplishments” then send you packing with “best regards”; and where job interviewers inform you that you are “over qualified” and your salary requirement is “over their budget”, I have found myself standing smack dab in the middle of a crossroad: to my left is early retirement/social security; to my right is self-employment. Since I am not ready for the grave just yet, self-employment is my right. It is my open door to flexibility so that I can still give my grandchildren rides back and forth to school, and it provides a new career path that will afford me opportunity to work from home and/or onsite.

Merriam Webster defines defiance as: the act or instance of defying; disposition to resist. I choose to defy all of the "somebody's" out there that attempt to set up mental roadblocks for those of us who love to soar above the naysayers. Where there is the appearance of doors being closed, those in defiance build a door...

This is why I am going back to school: to build a door
