I don't need money to make an impact by Roy - April 2023 Scholarship Essay
Although unlimited money would afford me more opportunities, I have one goal right now and I can do it without money, just a little bit of time and some effort.
I am working on a project to help enact change at my high school for those of us with disabilities.
The room set aside for those of us with learning disabilities is disruptive as they have reading aloud, study help and test taking all in the same room. Those of us with Dyslexia need silence in order to read and work sometimes, even the smallest distraction is difficult.
School always felt like more of a challenge for me. Anything that took my classmates 30 minutes to finish
took me up to an hour if I worked the same way; I always felt like I was a step behind. That was until I learned in 9th grade years how to stand up for myself. I wasn’t getting accommodations for some of my classes and it was negatively affecting my grades. I was told something during that point in my life: that no one was going to help you but yourself. After that I talked with my teachers and they were so calm and nice about it. My need to stand up for myself grew.
A quiet reading, study testing room is imperative for me and I haven't been allowed that recently. So even though I'm graduating, I want to speak up for those that maybe don't feel the ability to speak for themselves and I hope that my project points out these shortcomings and can help the kids after I have graduated.
