The Psychology of College by Roxanna - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

College is a time of personal, educational and mental growth. It is a stage of life that is very different than any other faced by most students before. It’s important to have a strong support system away from home as well as guidance to become the individual you want to.
To create an environment where students can thrive in a more holistic way, I would teach a class regarding the logistics of being a college student. It is important to focus on individual needs as well as academics. To satisfy both, I would integrate psychology and discussion activities. The class would be called the Psychology of College Students. It would include the psychological aspects of decision making, I would include ideas of time management, impulse control and overall strategies to reach goals. Another thing I would like to include is the emotional aspect of students moving away from home for the first time and coming to college. In addition, I would include a tidbit about interpersonal communication and interacting with peers in a way to create meaningful relationships with one another. As an exercise, at the end of every class students will get in groups and practice the concepts that they had learned that day. While implementing the concepts they will also be introduced to their peers which may also create friendships which may also create a stronger support system away from home. I would hope to make a difference beyond the academic career of students.
