How I'd Help Heal the World by Rosana - April 2023 Scholarship Essay
As someone who has always felt limited on both time and money, I would say I've spent a decent amount of time pondering what I would do if neither were an issue. I have my own problems that would almost entirely be solved with a few more hours at the end of each day or a couple hundred extra dollars in my bank account, so I am well aware of how much others are struggling who have even less than I, especially in the current economical climate. I have always hoped to either find a career that would allow me to help people who need it, or one that supplies me with the resources to be able to assist them (i.e. free time and finances). Being granted both would make it so much easier to make a difference on a global scale.
The first thing I would do is ensure that women and children everywhere would have access to a good education by opening schools and simultaneously solve the lack of educators crisis by ensuring all teachers hired for these schools were generously compensated for their hard work; on that same note, I would grant every current teacher an annual bonus that equates to more than just a barely livable wage when combined with their salary. Secondly, I would close the wage gap between men and women by paying every working women the difference between how much they make compared to their male colleagues, as well as providing every family whose children are working to contribute to their household enough money for them to not have to worry about paying their bills on time for at least as long as it would take for their youngest ones to finish college. Then, I would pay for everyone to have access to free healthcare including mental health resources along with funding further studies of how to cure physical or mental ailments. I'd also like to solve the housing crisis by either building more homes or buying up the many properties that are currently far out of the majority's affordability range and giving people houses for free and having nutritious food delivered every week to each of them. Lastly, I'd have millions of trees planted across the globe to slow climate change and give people who prefer to live off the land more access to food and natural resources.
There are (far too many) people who cannot even take the time to think of how they could help others because they have to worry about their own survival first and it is devastating to know of the inhumane conditions some of us are living in. I was only capable of writing this essay and dreaming of doing these things because I was lucky enough to have gotten the education that I have thus far and the circumstances I was born into, which is something I will never take for granted. It would be amazing to give others better opportunities like some people have done for me.
