As a first-generation college student, my journey through higher education has been one of both remarkable challenges and profound triumphs. My ultimate educational goal is to not only graduate college but to further pursue a master’s degree and, eventually, an MBA. This aspiration is deeply personal, driven by a desire to break barriers and pave the way for future generations in my family and community.
Growing up, I observed the sacrifices my parents made to provide a better life for their children. They faced socioeconomic challenges and systemic obstacles that made higher education seem like a distant dream. As the youngest of six siblings, I witnessed the struggles and successes of my family, each of us navigating our own paths. The desire to honor their sacrifices and build a brighter future for myself has been a driving force behind my educational pursuits.
My journey began at Louisiana State University (LSU), where I’ve immersed myself in academic and extracurricular activities. Balancing a rigorous course load with leadership roles, such as serving as the president of Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE) at LSU, has been a defining aspect of my college experience. PSE, being the only national and professional business fraternity specializing in sales, marketing, and management, provided me with an invaluable platform to develop leadership skills and advocate for underrepresented groups in these fields. Leading a diverse group of peers and working to foster an inclusive environment has reinforced my commitment to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for others.
In addition to my leadership roles, I’ve been actively involved in the LSU Gospel Choir as a soprano. This involvement has allowed me to express my identity, connect with my community, and celebrate my heritage through music. The choir has been a sanctuary where I could contribute to a collective voice advocating for change and unity.
Despite the successes and growth I’ve experienced, the journey has not been without its challenges. As a Black woman attending a predominantly white institution (PWI), I’ve faced unique difficulties, including a lack of representation and feelings of being overlooked. These experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of self-advocacy. They have also fueled my determination to use my education and experiences to empower others.
My immediate goal is to graduate from LSU with a degree that will lay a solid foundation for my future endeavors. Upon graduation, I plan to apply for a master’s program, focusing on areas that align with my career aspirations. The pursuit of a master’s degree is crucial for deepening my knowledge and skills in my chosen field. It will provide me with the expertise and credentials necessary to achieve my long-term goal of obtaining an MBA.
An MBA represents the culmination of my academic journey and professional aspirations. It embodies the next step in my quest to become a financial advisor dedicated to empowering individuals through financial education. Recognizing the economic disparities that disproportionately affect communities of color, I am committed to demystifying financial literacy and providing accessible resources to those who need them most. An MBA will equip me with advanced skills in financial management, strategic planning, and leadership, enabling me to make a meaningful impact in my community.
Achieving these educational milestones will not only fulfill my personal goals but also serve as a testament to the strength and resilience of my family. As a first-generation graduate, the accomplishment of earning a degree and pursuing advanced education is a profound achievement that reflects the values of perseverance and determination that have been instilled in me. It is a symbol of breaking barriers and creating opportunities where none previously existed.
In summary, my journey from a first-generation college student to aspiring MBA candidate is driven by a deep-seated desire to honor my family’s sacrifices, overcome systemic obstacles, and empower others. Each step of this journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of education. As I continue to strive toward my academic and professional goals, I am motivated by the belief that education is a powerful tool for creating positive change and paving the way for future generations.
