A Greater Florida A&M by Rodnyll - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

Changing Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) in a positive way would involve a multifaceted approach that focuses on improving various aspects of the institution. The changes that could be brought about in FAMU would not only enrich the experience of the students attending there but the well being of African-American folks across the nation. Given the authority, I'd change FAMU to improve in academic excellence, alumni engagement, and student support.
FAMU is the #1 public HBCU in the nation, however it still faces issues that other HBCU's face. Unfortunately, HBCU's tend to be underfunded and don't have many of the resources and facilities other institutions have the luxury of bearing. Of course, this shouldn't discourage any improvements that can be made to the university by maximizing the output of the resources it is given. If I was given the authority to improve Florida A&M, I'd first focus on the academic aspect. I'd go about this by updating the curriculum continuously to match it up to industry standards and invest in faculty development programs to recruit top professors and maintain a high-quality education. Another way I would improve the university is through alumni engagement. By fostering strong alumni networks, students will have long term connections through internships and financial support. Lastly, I'd improve student support by establishing mentorship programs for student guidance throughout their journey, expanding scholarship and other financial aid services to make education more accessible, and enhance mental health and wellness services to support and maintain overall student well-being.
With these changes under my authority, I'd aim to transform FAMU into being more inclusive, innovative, and academically excellent. This way, FAMU would not only serve its students well but serve a broader role in its contribution to society. These goals would need collaboration, investment, and long-term commitment from university faculty and staff.
